Urban Foraging – Fruit Trees

Urban foraging has become quite a popular pastime all over the world. For the urban hunter-gatherer the adventure of seeking out fruit trees in laneways and streets is all part of the fun! There are many fruit tree branches hanging over fences, full of fruit to indulge in that would otherwise go to waste. Have you ever been cruising down the street and spotted a branch packed with juicy fruit, and just wished you could stop and grab them for your supper? Well, you can!

Urban foraging or urban scavenging is a wonderful concept as you’re harvesting fruit that is most probably organic, local and free!

There are a few common courtesy rules in place to keep everyone happy.

1. Don’t be greedy.Take what you need and leave what you don’t so others can enjoy the produce too.
2. Don’t damage the tree. Be careful when picking the fruit and be respectful of the fruit you are taking.
3. If you are worried about taking the fruit perhaps ask the owners first if the fruit is in a precarious spot. Although an over hanging branch is technically public property the idea of urban foraging is engaging with your local area, respecting where you are, sharing between neighbors and having fun doing it.
