Sweet peas are climbers, and grow quite tall… 2-3 meters! So, remember they need plenty of room to grow. Plant them near a wall or a fence or pop up some lattice for them to meander. But if you don’t have the space, there are some very cute dwarf varieties too! It’s a good idea to add some manure and/or compost to the soil or pot before planting your sweet peas. They also need a sunny position. Easily germinated from seed they can be planted direct into the ground, or plant your seed into a punnet and transplant them into their permanent position when the seedling reaches around 4cm. Do be careful not to keep them too damp by over watering, as the seed will rot. Also, a great tip is pinching out the tips of the new growth of your sweet pea plant to have a more abundant flowering season. They’re very aromatic and are fabulous to encourage bees into your garden to help pollinate your vegetables.

March 17th, St Patrick’s day is the official sweet pea planting day in Australia.

So happy plantings Me Little Sweet Peas!
